Michael Mataka has been elected president of the Malawi Institute of Journalism Students’ Union (Mijsu) after defeating three other contenders in elections held on Thursday.
According to official results released by the Mijsu Elections Committee, Mataka polled 93 votes, beating Yamikani Chimkango who secured 62 votes, William Mandala with 27 votes, and Aaron Jawaduh Assani who got 11 votes.
In the vice presidency race, Priscilla Materechera emerged winner after securing 101 votes against Tamandani Chauluka’s 88 votes.
Yankho Malindi went through unopposed as General Secretary.
Speaking following his election, Mataka said his administration will prioritize unity and professional exposure for students.
“My core vision is to unite the students and also link students to journalism bodies for exposure and experience,” he said.
In other key positions, Francis Jana was elected Finance Director with 108 votes against Prisca Thom’s 82 votes, while Davie Mass went through unopposed as Communications Director.
